Honoring our Scientists

The IUGG honors distinguished scientists and outstanding early career researchers for their contribution to the field of Earth and space sciences and to international research cooperation in geodesy and geophysics. The prestigious awards include:

Gold Medal

The Gold Medal is the highest honor of the IUGG, established in 2013 to award Earth and space scientists for outstanding contributions to geodesy and geophysics and for unselfish international cooperation in research.

The Medal is presented at the IUGG General Assembly following the award’s announcement. The Awardee is bestowed the Medal, a Medal certificate and an Honorary Membership (Fellowship) of IUGG. Furthermore, the Awardee will be invited to give the Gold Medal Lecture at the General Assembly. Details on the award can be found here.

Fellowship (Honorary Membership)

The Fellowship (Honorary Membership) of the IUGG is a tribute to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to international cooperation in geodesy or geophysics and attained eminence in the field of Earth and space sciences.

Elected Fellows are bestowed a Silver Medal and a certificate of IUGG Fellowship, which is presented at the IUGG General Assembly following the announcement of the awards. Details on the award can be found here.

In addition, the IUGG Bureau confers the IUGG Fellowship to members of the IUGG Executive and Finance Committees and to Association Secretaries General on their retirement from office.

Early Career Scientist Award

This Award honors early career scientists for their outstanding research in Earth and space sciences and for their international research cooperation. IUGG Early Career Scientist Awards are presented at the IUGG General Assembly following the announcement of the awards. The awardees are bestowed a trophy and a certificate.

IUGG supports travel of the awardees to attend the General Assembly. The awardees will be invited to give a talk at the General Assembly. Details on the award can be found here.
