1. Happy New Year! The IUGG Yearbook for 2004 is finished.

Thanks to all of the Adhering Body National Committees and the Associations for helping to update the information in the IUGG Yearbook! Assistant Secretary General Ryan Aucone completed the master copy of the 2004 Yearbook on 23 December in a new A4 format. The new format requires fewer pages that are cheaper to print. It will be posted on the IUGG Website (http://www.IUGG.org) during the week of January 4, and it will be printed and distributed in the Netherlands by the end of the month. During 2004, updates to addresses and other information in the Yearbook should be sent to the Secretariat (secretariat@iugg.org) as soon as they are known; our goal is to update the Web copy of the Yearbook as throughout the year.

2. Sapporo Council Meeting Minutes

The draft minutes of the Council Meetings held in Sapporo have been reviewed and corrected, and are now posted on the IUGG home page under the main heading of "General Assemblies". The minutes will also be included in the Comptes Rendus of the 2003 General Assembly, now in preparation.

3. 9th Generation IGRF Coefficients Released

The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) is a mathematical representation of the Earth's magnetic field (both the main field and its secular variation) that is widely used in studies of Earth's deep interior, crust, ionosphere and magnetosphere. It is updated every 5 years by Working Group V-8 of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) and is the product of a collaborative effort among magnetic field modelers and the institutes involved in collecting and disseminating magnetic field data from observatories and surveys around the world and from satellites. An unprecedented amount of good quality satellite data resulting from the International Decade of Geopotential Research was available for this determination. The coefficients of this mathematical model and the software needed to calculate magnetic field values are available on the IAGA web site (http://www.IUGG.org/IAGA) and World Data Centers located in the USA, Japan, and the U.K. The IGRF is provided by IAGA as a service to the international scientific community.

4. IUGG-related meetings occurring during January - March 2004

A calendar of meetings of interest to IUGG disciplines (especially those organized by IUGG Associations) is posted on the IUGG Web Site [www.IUGG.org]. Specific information about these meetings can be found there. Individual Associations also list more meetings on their web sites appropriate to their disciplines.
