1. IUGG General Assembly Preparations are continuing for the IUGG General Assembly, June 30-July 11, 2003, in Sapporo, Japan. Please note that the Abstract Deadline is January 30, 2003, which is also the deadline for applications for IUGG travel support. The General Assembly web site, accessible from the IUGG home page, includes all the instructions and forms. The letter requesting the name of each delegate to the IUGG Council Meeting in Sapporo was mailed on 4 November to all IUGG Adhering Bodies and National Committees. The letter also requested a Quadrennial Report, in electronic format. Adhering Bodies should notify the Secretariat if the letter has not been received. The same envelope contained the written report of the Nominations Committee, which is also posted on the IUGG web page. 2. Meetings in 2003 selected for IUGG support IUGG co-sponsors symposia and meetings appropriate to our disciplines of study. A small fund is spent annually to assist meetings, and especially to support the attendance of young scientists and scientists from developing countries. In years of the IUGG General Assembly, the budget for meetings is reduced to $5000 (USD) so that more money is available to support attendance at the General Assembly. Officers of the Associations and Inter-Association Commissions and Committees nominate meetings to receive these awards. For 2003, IUGG will support the following two meetings. Call for nominations for the second Albert I Medal The International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) is requesting nominations for the second Albert I Medal, to be awarded at the IUGG General Assembly in Sapporo. The medal is named for the late Prince Albert I of Monaco, who organized the oceanography section of IUGG in 1919. The first Albert I Medal was awarded in 2001 to Professor Walter Munk, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, USA, who is also the 1999 Kyoto Prize Laureate for Earth and Planetary Sciences. Please contact Prof. Devendra Lal, Chair, Prince Albert I Medal Committee, (dlal@ucsd.edu) for information regarding the process to submit a nomination for the Albert I Medal. 4. Appointments to Statutes and By-Laws Committee Dr. Masaru Kono, IUGG President, has announced the members of the Committee that will accept proposed changes to the IUGG Statutes and By-laws. The Members are Prof. U. Shamir, Chair, E. R. Engdahl, R. Schlich, V. Shannon, and P. Wyllie. Proposals from the IUGG Adhering Bodies to modify the Statutes and By-Laws should be submitted to the IUGG Secretariat (secretariat@iugg.org) before December 31, 2002. 5. International Handbook of Earthquake and Engineering Seismology (Part A) The first of a two-volume comprehensive review of earthquake and engineering seismology is now available. This state-of-the-art work, edited by W.H.K. Lee, H. Kanamori, P.C. Jennings, and C. Kisslinger, fulfills IASPEI's ambition to create a useful reference for earthquake and engineering seismologists, as well as for earthquake engineers, geologists,and geophysicists. Part A, which includes a CD-ROM, features 56 full-length chapters detailing the history of seismology, theoretical and observational seismology, earthquake geology and mechanics, and the Earth's structure. Part B will be published in Spring, 2003, and features 34 chapters and 4 appendices, detailing strong-motion seismology, selected topics in earthquake engineering, earthquake prediction and hazards mitigation. Honors and Appointments The U.K. Institute of Physics (IOP) has announced that the 2002 Charles Chree Medal and Prize will be given to Dr. Michael Lockwood, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, U.K., to honor his "contributions to sun-climate relationships." Dr. Lockwood is Chair of Division III: Magnetospheric Phenomena, of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA). At their annual celebration on November 21, the University of Copenhagen conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree upon Prof. Fernando Sanso (Italy). Prof. Sanso is President of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). Drs. Gordon McBean (Canada) and Uri Shamir (Israel) were recently appointed to ICSU Committee on Scientific Planning and Research (CSPR) Panel on the Environment. The Panel will review current programmes on the environment within the International Council for Science (ICSU) and then recommend a plan of action. 7. IUGG-related meetings occurring during December, 2002 - February, 2003 A calendar of meetings of interest to IUGG disciplines (especially those organized by IUGG Associations) is posted on the IUGG Web Site [ www.IUGG.org ]. Specific information about these meetings can be found there. Individual Associations also list more meetings on their web sites appropriate to their disciplines.
