1. IUGG Representatives to meetings

Dr. Philip Woodworth (U.K.) will represent IUGG/IAPSO at the First Session of the Joint WMO/IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) of the World Meteorological Organization, which will be in Akureyri, Iceland, in June.

Dr. M. Kono (Japan) will represent IUGG at the 3rd World Water Forum which will be in Kyoto, Japan, in June. Dr. K. Takeuchi (Japan) and Dr. P. Hubert (France), President-elect and Secretary-General of IAHS, will also attend.

Dr. Roland List (Canada) will represent IUGG/IAMAS/IAHS at the 53rd session of the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization, which will be in Geneva in June.

Dr. N.J. Peters (U.S.A.) will represent IUGG/IAHS at the SCOPE (Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment) 11th General Assembly which will be Bremen, Germany, in September.

2. IUGG Support of Interdisciplinary Initiatives involving Developing Countries

At the 1999 General Assembly, a special "opportunity fund" was set aside in the budget to support proposals for inter-Association initiatives. As of now, $35,000 has been allocated for 7 projects, as shown below. Additional proposals are welcome.

  1. South America Geoid 2000 Workshop held at Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil, May 17-19, 2000 IAG/IAPSO
  2. Second Workshop on "Gravity, Geodesy, and the Ocean Circulation as inferred from Altimetry" in South America (October, 2001, Mar del Plata, Argentina) IAPSO/IAG
  3. Initiation of a Joint Commission on Groundwater-Seawater Interactions IAPSO/IAHS
  4. The Webcyclopedia Project GeoRisk Commission
  5. Exploration of a joint Assembly in India in 2005 IAHS/IAMAS/IAPSO
  6. Joint Working Group on Subduction Zone studies IASPEI/IAVCEI
  7. Historical Database for the Pacific; and study of submarine slumping as a tsunami mechanism Tsunami Commission

3. IUGG-related meetings occurring during June-August, 2001

A calendar of meetings of interest to IUGG disciplines (especially those organized by IUGG Associations) has been added to the IUGG Web Site [www.IUGG.org]. More information about these meetings can be found there. Individual Associations also list more meetings appropriate to their disciplines. For example, the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS/AISH) has a complete "meetings" section on their web site: http://www.cig.ensmp.fr/~iahs.
