Geosciences in Africa
One of the IUGG priority areas for 2007-2011 is "Geo-sciences in Africa". IUGG scientists carry out successful collaborations with African scientists with strong benefits to both sides.
Some recent activities of the Union include:
- the Electronic Geophysical Year (a research program of IUGG) promotes significantly the research and networking in Africa related to reducing the digital divide for science and education in Africa;
- the International Heliophysical Year (initiated by IUGG) developed a wide network of African space scientists including activities in education and training in satellite and ground based instrumentation, studies of heliophysical phenomena, development of regional space science centers;
- the Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth Interior (one of eight IUGG associations) was held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2009;
- several workshops and symposia co-sponsored by IUGG including most recent 20th Electromagnetic Induction Workshop to be held on 18-24 September 2010, Porto Sokhna, Egypt; Scientific School on GPS and GIS, 30 November - 11 December, 2009, Brazzaville, Congo; International Conference "Groundwater & Climate in Africa", 24-28 June 2008, Kampala, Uganda.
